Apply several months in advance, especially if a visa is needed. The US State Department recommends all cruise ship passengers have their passport with them in case of emergency, even if not required by the cruiseline.

Make sure your passport is valid at least six months from trip return date and has
two or more blank pages.

Passports for children under 16 are valid for 5 years. Passports for adults are valid for 10 years, so check expiration dates carefully.
